Name: Noah Emmanuel Coulson
Nicknames: No, Coul
Age: 23 (b: 31st August 1989)
Blood: half blood (wizarding father, muggle mother)
Appearance: Noah is 6 foot even and whilst not the most muscled or athletic guy on the planet, he leads a healthy lifestyle so he has subtle definition on his otherwise quite lanky frame. He has thick chocolate brown hair often styled into 'casual disarray' but more often than not looks like he's sporting the 'bed head' style. He has clear, fairly pale skin and brown eyes flanked by surprisingly long eyelashes for a boy but thick, dark eyebrows. His clothing tends to be the uniform of whichever of his jobs he's at/just left but when not at work he favours casual clothing, jeans, converse and some kind of simple band t-shirt or plaid shirt.
Personality: People who don't know him very well often mistake him as short, glib and deeply sarcastic and mistrusting of others. He's actually quite a talkative guy, in the right circumstances and with the right people, and has a lot more patience than people first think from his straight-talking, to-the-point manner of speaking. He has a huge heart, always putting his family's well-being over his own, and as such he isn't self-reflexive in the slightest as he rarely takes the time to consider himself; he finds it a lot easier to advise others and comment on their lives than think critically about his own. In this sense he's a helper, a joiner, who will relish every opportunity thrown his way and embrace it with all his energy and enthusiasm. Coming from a hard up, working-class household Noah appreciates people who have had to work to get where they are in life and knows how to live frugally - he's not very materialistic due to this and his prized possessions, which include his CD collection and acoustic and electric guitars, are truly his pride and joy as he's had to scrimp and save to get them. He is notoriously difficult to persuade to act spontaneously, he likes making plans and following through on arrangements and tends to panic if someone suggests an activity that wasn't at least on a verbal itinerary.
Background: The first-born child of a Spanish, Catholic muggle and an English, Jewish father Noah was born into a working-class family rife with difference and conflict. His mother Adela Rivera GarcĂa, who had grown up in an oppressive household deep in the Andalusian countryside, met his father quite by chance when the car Joseph Coulson had hired to drive on his holiday in Spain broke down near their village. Whilst her father and brothers got to work on fixing the Englishman's broken motor, Adela and Joseph shared something of a 'moment', enough for her to announce to her parents some days (and several covert meetings) later that she intended to leave her home and family and go back to England with Joseph to marry him. Her family did not approve of Joseph in the slightest and shunned both her and him, later shunning the grandchildren their daughter had borne to him, first Noah himself (22), then Lydia (16), Gabriel/Gabe (13) and Leah (9). Adela, after some much-needed improvement of her English speaking skills thanks to her new husband, found a job in Leeds Art Gallery, working as a cataloguer of new exhibits and putting her knowledge of Spanish and French to good use as she communicated on the gallery's behalf with overseas galleries and art collectors. Joseph meanwhile continued following his lifelong ambition to train at St Mungo's, apparating between their small home in Leeds and London every day to work as a Healer, later specialising in the Creature-Induced Injuries department where he toils away to this day.
Noah attended Hogwarts when the time came and was sorted into Gryffindor where he was a bright student who did well in all his subjects but excelled particularly in Charms, having something of a flair for it and a natural creativity which served him well when it came to wand-work, and was even awarded a prize for his charms work in seventh year. He was a Gryffindor Prefect and also played on the House Quidditch team in his 7th year as a Chaser. Graduating in 2007, Noah had a wealth of options open to him and a plethora of brilliant references from his professors to recommend him but he instead chose to spend about 18 months working abroad, helping to build wells and schools in various African villages as part of a charitable volunteer organisation.
His mother Adela was unfortunately killed in a hit-and-run incident when walking home from work the night of 31st August 2009, something which devastated the family and has also made Noah's birthdays something of a sore spot for him because, sure, it's nice to celebrate being another year older but it's also the anniversary of his mum's death, something he'd rather not celebrate funnily enough. Joseph has been very nurturing towards his children (moreso than he once was; he'd often taken a back-seat with Adela's mode of parenting) since this time. Noah, wanting to help his siblings and father, also stepped up, taking on more responsibility with regards to housework and looking after Lydia, Gabe and Leah. Prior to his mum's death he had plans to apply to read music at a muggle university but this plan went down the drain and he now holds a variety of part-time jobs that are flexible so he can be sure to do things such as be an obnoxious protective older brother of Lydia, pick up Leah from primary school and shuttle Gabe around to various sports events when he's home from Hogwarts. Their dad very much appreciates Noah's efforts on this front and as such continues to work long hours at Mungo's to make ends meet.
In December 2011 Adela's younger sister, Eva, showed up out-of-the-blue at their house, having rebelled from her family and left their rather oppressive home and Joseph's natural compassion took over and he took her in. She's very intense, passionate and flighty, ridiculously beautiful in a dramatic way, and incredibly grateful of all the Coulsons' help. Eva has since become a permanent feature of their household and Noah is helping to improve her rusty English speaking skills so that she can pursue her lifelong ambition, acting. He acts as her primary translator, having grown up speaking Spanish to his mother, but is somewhat worried about how attached she is becoming to his father and vice versa. Having to watch his aunt and dad make goo-goo eyes across the dinner table is really something he'd rather avoid if possible.
As far as his own romantic endeavours go, they're sporadic to say the least, despite the fact that he's inherently a long-term relationship kind of guy. He's been the bad guy and broke it off in pretty much every single one of his 'relationships' because he knows he's a terrible boyfriend - it sounds like such crap when he says it aloud but his genuine reason is that he just doesn't have the time to spend on/with someone else that the girl in question obviously deserves to have devoted to her. That's his excuse anyway, deep-down it's probably more to do with an inbuilt fear of rejection and the fact he panics when it comes to experiencing feelings akin to love, lust, whatever. Is notoriously unresponsive when asked whether he's seeing any girls and keeps his cards extremely close to his chest when it comes to discussing crushes, dates - mostly he just wants to keep his private life actually private, is that a crime?
Characteristics: He's a creative individual and enjoys drawing, writing music, playing guitar and singing. He recently formed a band with some friends - fellow wizards Greg (vocals + undeniable stage presence) and Harry (drums but seems like he can play every other instrument known to man) and muggle-schoolfriend-turned-maths-student-at-Leeds-University Elliot (bass guitar). At this point they play mostly covers but he's trying to write them original material and, finally, think up a name for them. He plays lead guitar at the moment and backup vocals - he actually has the best voice out of the group but hates being shoved centre-stage like that so mostly he is an oddly low-profile lead guitarist who manages to play his mid-song solos in an oddly shy manner and leaves the posing and stage presence thing to Greg. The band itself have eclectic musical preferences so their influences are widespread, mainly think Jimi Hendrix, Beck, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins, Talking Heads, The Cure, The Ramones, The Clash, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Spoon, The Shins... mostly they just like music, music outside of the average Top 40 chart that is, but they can all be very harsh and discriminatory towards certain musical genres and bands. As such, Noah has a few guilty pleasures, mainly the likes of U2, All-American Rejects and, most shamefully, Coldplay.
Other:
-He still lives at the family home in Leeds but actually prefers it to the possibility of finding his own place somewhere. His bedroom is up in the converted attic space (earning him many a bumped head thanks to the slope of the ceiling) and he has well and truly made the space his own. His walls are plastered with band and film posters and collages of photographs he has taken and it's a running joke in the household that they can't even see what colour paint is on the walls beneath all the images.
-The Coulsons are very much a musical family so many years ago they renovated and thoroughly soundproofed their sizeable garage which now acts as a music practice room rather than its original purpose. The walls are also painted with chalkboard paint, meaning lyrics or music can be written right onto the walls in chalk, just in case anyone gets a sudden burst of inspiration whilst practicing in there. At any given time there'll be the old piano, someone's drum kit, a couple of bass guitars, a few microphones in various states of broken-ness and Noah's beloved guitars all packed in there... and probably Noah too if he's not at work. Noah sings, plays guitar (acoustic and electric) and occasionally piano, Lydia plays drums and electric guitar, and Gabe has tentatively picked up a bass guitar in recent months. Leah had to pick an instrument at school recently and, not wanting to copy her older siblings, is sticking with the classical for now - she plays violin. Joseph indulges in his musical hobby, specifically playing classical pieces on the piano, in the little spare time he has off work - he was the one who first piqued Noah's interested in music.
-He has a variety of jobs with flexible hours - he frequently works the morning-shift in Flourish and Blotts, part-time at a music store in Notting Hill in London (called 'Revolution Music', shortened to 'Revs') and as a barista in the cafe of the Leeds art gallery where his mum used to work. He also is one of the Daily Prophet's team of freelance photographers - if he gets a tip about something newsworthy going down, he rushes to get a photo or simply follows where he is sent off to in the hope of getting a nice shot and earn a couple extra Sickles a go.
-He drives an old but tough-as-nails Ford Escort - it's not the prettiest of cars, sure, but it's his baby. He calls it 'Faith', named after the character of Faith Lehane in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. He claims this is a tribute to one of his favourite pieces of characterisation and development in the TV programme but really he just thinks Eliza Dushku is hot and mostly did it for that reason.
-He needs to wear glasses for reading but mostly wears contact lenses instead unless he's feeling particularly tired and he'll begrudgingly resort to the glasses.
