Name: Derek Alexander MacKinnon
Nicknames: Mack (from his mates), Oy! MacKinnon! (at work mostly) Der (very rarely used)
Age: 37 (b: 5th November 1974)
Blood: half blood (witch mum, muggle dad)
Appearance: The first thing people notice about Derek is that, fuck, he's imposing. At 6 foot 4 he's tall and weighs in at quite an impressive amount of pounds thanks to considerable muscle weight- yeah he's one of those kinds of guys who like to do insane amounts of exercise and weight training to keep themselves fit and muscled. When you get past the initial "bloody hell he's scary" impression, you'd be met with a huge grin, or a loud, cheerful laugh from Derek- he seems constantly welcoming with a smile, even if he doesn't know you, yet. He has dark brown hair and light brown eyes to match along with a rather defined, chiselled face with a perpetual eye-crinkle expression from laughing so hard. His skin is tanned because when he can help it he's in some hot country or another or at least constantly outdoors and so exposed to the sun. Clothes-wise, he's pretty fashionable, preferring casual but smart jeans and a shirt over anything though he looks pretty damn good in a suit too.
Personality: Outwardly Derek is a laddish, loud, lewd bloke- the first to crack a joke or take the piss out of someone. Half of what he says is crude- who doesn't love a healthy dose of swearing and innuendo in any given conversation?!- and the other half is so self-assured that others automatically find themselves agreeing with him due to his strong and rather forceful personality. He's very intense, living life to the full by making everything fun and light, no matter how risky or inappropriate that carefree ideal may seem. A hard worker, Derek punishes himself a lot on a day-to-day basis, accepting only the best from himself and from others. He isn't the brightest guy around (he won't be winning any prizes anytime soon) but he's not, by any means, an idiot either. He isn't that into academics, 'reading and crap' as he says, but is one of those annoying people who just knows stuff that he's picked up from his mates, family and, god forbid, tv shows!
He's very upfront, blunt and brash in his manner of speaking and he always speaks his mind, regardless of whether he's speaking to a friend, family member or indeed a high-ranking Ministry official. In other words, if he thinks you're talking utter bollocks and/or you're a complete prat, he'll cheerfully tell you that. This tends to, obviously, get him in a lot of bother with his superiors, the Head Aurors in particular regard him as too rebellious and are convinced that his risk-taking, boisterous nature will get him and everyone around him into deep trouble 'one of these days'. So... honestly? He's probably seen by most who don't know him that well as a bit of a dick... and well they're mostly right! Derek does have a nicer, less intense side to him... he can be unbelievably charming and suave, when he wants to be, but he'd never show his 'wanky softer side' willingly, unless he really liked someone.
Background: Derek grew up in a loud, busy household deep in the English countryside, the first born to the Mackinnons- a witch mother, Cassandra and a muggle father, Craig. Cassandra was an advisor in the Minister's office, before leaving when Grace was born in order to look after her children properly. Meanwhile Craig was decidedly... eccentric in his career, he'd done many stints as a magician, illusionist, dancer and singer on Broadway and the West End alike- he hated to be stuck in a boring nine til five job, hence his string of odd professions. Derek has five sisters so it's not hard to accept that he's a tad overprotective of every single one of them. The oldest of the MacKinnon kids, with Marie (21), Jessica (24), Lucy (27), Kate (29) and Grace (33) following behind him, he always took the big brother role. His dad died shortly before Marie was born and Derek grew up a lot after that time, helping his mum with everything and keeping a firm eye on his sisters to keep them safe from harm. His oldest sister, Grace is the only one 'happily married off' (though he naturally remains suspicious of her husband because he still enjoys playing the protective prat of a brother role). Grace and, her husband, Greg have an 8 year old daughter called Ava who Derek absolutely adores and spoils rotten- she's one of the girls that gets to see his softer side!
When the time came for Hogwarts, Derek scampered off quite happily and was the loud, cheeky chappy kind of kid whom everyone thought was either a) downright irritating or b) hilarious. He was the kind of kid that had very little consideration for the rules- "Ha! Rules were made to be broken!" was a statement he seemed to live by- but did just enough school work to get by. That was until he was about 15 and after spending a summer with his uncle, who was an Auror in the Law Enforcement Department, Derek suddenly had a change of heart and seemed to mellow (only ever so slightly mind you!) enough to be a tad more focused on his school work. His grades improved immensely after that and all of it was to the goal of becoming an Auror upon graduation because if he was honest, he thought it was a "pretty fucking cool" job and he liked to get himself into trouble and danger enough already so the dangerous missions wouldn't phase him. Or so he thought anyway. Upon graduation in 1993 he was indeed accepted onto the Auror training program and he practically lived for his job for many years after. After completing his training he started in the department and, after seeing a kind of chemistry between them, the 'powers that be' paired him with Fiona Hathaway, a match for him. They thought she'd keep him in line and put him in his place whenever he got a little too cocky, whether she did is debatable, but one thing is for sure they grew very close and became better, and worst, work partners because of it.
As is so often true with those in their profession, Derek and Fiona loved very strongly and heatedly (their arguments at work were enough for people to see that at least) but it was ultimately that which got them into trouble. While on a mission together they were captured by the Deatheaters they were looking for and the group, seeing that Derek quite obviously flinched when they hit Fiona, played on this weakness by torturing him and forcing her to watch it. Eventually they overpowered their captors and escaped, but Derek ran back into the hideout while promptly exploded afterwards. He survived, naturally, but realised after their ordeal that caring about Fiona was going to get them both killed one of these days. And so, when he limped back into the department late that night, he asked his superiors to be send him on a mission abroad, away from her, but to tell her that he had indeed survived the explosion. Needless to say, they didn't tell her that, but Derek, doing undercover work in Russia for the best part of a decade had no idea of this falsehood. Now he returns to the country, having finished his undercover surveillance, and the department which pretty much sees him as dead.
Characteristics: Unsurprisingly, Derek is a complete sports nut- extreme sports are his favourite but he'll stick to 'safe' ones too, if only for the sake of his mum and her constant worrying over him. He tends to play Quidditch most often though, practicing with his mate Kale Gallagher, and he's pretty decent at it (not to professional standard but getting there).
Other: Lives in a flat in the heart of London with a golden retriever, called Honey, which used to belong to Grace but he took it in as his own after his sister became too busy looking after her daughter to care for the dog.
