Name: Lydia Mary Coulson
Nicknames: Lyd, Liddy, Lady. The Little Mermaid, Ariel. (She gets any number of names such as Lori, Libby, Laura from Michael who still doesn’t appear to know her name even after two months with her as his assistant.)
Age: 18 (b: 31st October 1995)
Blood: half blood (wizarding father, muggle mother)
Appearance: Her slender (some might say skinny) 5 foot 3 frame may appear petite and demure but underneath is a fierce young woman waiting to come alive. Her style tends to be rather sweet with flowery dresses, otherwise she sticks to jeans, layered vintage tees, plaid shirts that probably look like they should be made for a boy, jumpers, and trainers. She has scarlet red hair and bright blue eyes.
Personality: Lydia is a girl that just wants to fit in. She is as much of a girly girl as she is a tomboy. She loves shopping almost as much as she relishes playing sports, almost. Some think her as more of a tomboy because of her adoration for sports, especially football. The girl with the unwavering moral compass, she is a do-gooder with a sunshiny personality. One of those people it is very difficult to hate because she has a sense of innocence and genuine sweetness. She can be quite impressionable and gullible, and always sees the best in people. Very personable and eternally optimistic she is a wealth of positivity and likes flashing her broad smile around everywhere. She is talkative, and tends to be chatty when she gets nervous or fills awkward moments with humor.
She has big dreams of becoming a professional footballer, she plays on a football team in Leeds outside Hogwarts. Truth be told, she adores Quidditch but being terrified of heights makes her a reckless flyer. She can’t fly in a straight line to save her life and much prefers staying on the ground.
She is both physically and mentally grounded with a reasonable, responsible head on her shoulders. Humble and naturally generous are traits that run in her family and ones that she possesses as well. If ever boasting it is playful or joking. She tends to fall in love fast and hard, often sacrificing herself completely in the process. Currently she has a crush on Kyle Michalka who she plays football and baseball with and a growing, somewhat confusing crush on Rhys Armitage, not that she would ever admit it to him or anyone though his head might become so big it couldn’t fit through doors, and wouldn’t that be a shame. More than anything she loves her family, even if her father treats her like a little girl (and she wants to be treated like an adult) she is eternally and fiercely loyal to her family and extenuating family: her friends.
She has a fair amount of musical talent but enjoys playing for fun and is not very competitive or would never consider performing in a professional sense. Secretly she worries that she doesn’t have enough internal drive and a strong enough competitive streak to be a professional athlete either. Nevertheless she does have a hidden leadership quality about her: a very logical, rational, and diplomatic mind that would fit very well into the political realm.
With that being said she has a summer internship (which she takes very seriously) under Michael Lehrer in The Department of International Magical Cooperation, and basically answers phones, gets him coffee, and picks up his dry cleaning throughout the day. Be that as it may she does think international dealings in the Ministry and creating change would be a pretty wicked job. Lydia does have a tendency to ramble, especially when she is nervous and whether Michael wants it or not he often gets her opinion. It is not uncommon for him to shut the door on her babbling at him. To which she says “Okay,” with a sigh, “Good morning to you too,” or “Yes Sir I’ll get right on that,” and goes back to her desk that she also secretly adores being this sort of high half oval shape which she sits behind and important people get to come up and talk to her before they have a chance to speak to Michael. She is the gate keeper. It makes her feel special and important somehow.
Lydia is an excitable person. Much smarter than others give her credit for, she is level headed and has a good mind for negotiation and politics having quite a great deal of tact and discretion being able to spin nearly anything in a positive light. She can be a bit overly opinionated, and runs a bit hot and cold, but doesn’t really have enough energy to hold a grudge forever, she is simply an emotional person.
Background: The second-born child of a Spanish, Catholic muggle and an English, Jewish father Lydia was born into a working-class family rife with difference and conflict. Her mother Adela Rivera García, who had grown up in an oppressive household deep in the Andalusian countryside, met her father quite by chance when the car Joseph Coulson had hired to drive on his holiday in Spain broke down near their village. Whilst her father and brothers got to work on fixing the Englishman's broken motor, Adela and Joseph shared something of a 'moment', enough for her to announce to her parents some days (and several covert meetings) later that she intended to leave her home and family and go back to England with Joseph to marry him. Her family did not approve of Joseph in the slightest and shunned both her and him, later shunning the grandchildren their daughter had borne to him, first Noah (22), Lydia herself (17), then Gabe (12) and Leah (9). Adela, after some much-needed improvement of her English speaking skills thanks to her new husband, found a job in Leeds Art Gallery, working as a cataloguer of new exhibits and putting her knowledge of Spanish and French to good use as she communicated on the gallery's behalf with overseas galleries and art collectors. Joseph meanwhile continued following his lifelong ambition to train at St Mungo's, apparating between their small home in Leeds and London every day to work as a Healer, later specialising in the Creature-Induced Injuries department where he toils away to this day.
Lydia attended Hogwarts when the time came and was sorted into Gryffindor where she is a bright student who does well in all her subjects but excels particularly in Charms and Divination, having something of a flair for it and a natural creativity which serves her well when it comes to wand-work, and predicting things. She is very close to her Divination professor and thinks he is rather dreamy, and talented. She plays on a football team outside of school. She loves Quidditch but is terrible at flying, mostly because she is afraid of heights and it freaks her out.
Her mother Adela was unfortunately killed in a hit-and-run incident when walking home from work the night of 31st August 2009, something which devastated the family. Joseph has been very nurturing towards his children (more so than he once was; he'd often taken a back-seat with Adela's mode of parenting) since this time. Noah takes care of her, Gabe, and Leah most of the time. Her mother’s death did a number on Lydia but it is something she doesn’t like to talk about, ever, to anyone. Lydia will often complain about being old enough to look after herself but really she enjoys Noah’s company and to be honest wouldn’t know what to do if she was left alone to take care of Gabe and Leah. She has tried cooking, none of her experiments, magical or otherwise have ever turned out very promising. She can make salad and toast that is about it. She did try to apparate once to pick up groceries and splinched herself. Since then her father treats her very much like a child.
Characteristics: A very creative person she enjoys hobbies such as photography and acting. She performs at least once a month, usually as part of the chorus or smaller parts, but her claim to fame was playing Little Red Riding Hood in 2009 before her mother’s death. Her musical talent lies mostly in playing instruments but she has a modest voice. Her instruments of choice are usually the loudest, drums and guitar (preferably electric). She tends to be a bit disruptive in class as well either by being chatty or enthusiastically raising her hand to answer a question until the Professor calls on her. Because of her mother Lydia is fluent in both Spanish and French and adores learning about different cultures and traveling.
The virgin thing is like the illusive pink elephant in the room for Lydia. She gets on best with those who are older than her, better than she does with her peers. Anytime she is talking to people more mature than herself she feels like the word VIRGIN is flashing in giant neon letters above her head, but often pretends like she is older than she really is. When guys flirt with her she gets flustered and either acts like one of the bros, or blushes and doesn’t know how to deal with it. Her alternative, and possibly less attractive manners of confronting hot guys who are flirting with her, are rambling nonsense or giving short, glib and deeply sarcastic answers to everything which tends to put them off her.
Lydia’s favourite holiday is Halloween. It is also her birthday. When she was little she thought that everyone dressing up in scary costumes was all for her. Lyd LOVES costume parties and dressing up probably for this very reason. She also loves scary movies, zombies, and horror films even if she hides behind her hands or someone else’s shoulder most of the time.
Other: To pad her CV she has held a number of leadership positions (including becoming a Prefect) in various clubs (some of which she started), societies, and outside of school does as much charity work and takes any part-time job that will have her.
She is currently running between her Internship and her part-time job at ‘Just Deserts’ as a waitress (the latter of which she has been secretly doing for a year now and has somehow managed to avoid running into her brother, sometimes taking rather absurd means to do so). Admittedly she did use her signature ‘puppy-dog eyes’ and the ‘my mum got killed in a hit-and-run story’ to gain sympathy points so that Ned would hire a very responsible and very desperate 15 year old.
She also works three days a week part-time at Madame Puddifoot's during the summer. Something her family has known about for ages, but it pays a lot less and Madame seems to have taken a shine to her and is convinced that she will find her a boyfriend one of these days, Lydia doesn’t hold out hope.
