Mason awkwardly ran a hand over the hair at the nape of his neck, "Uh... t' be honest I have no idea what happened that night. They must have known we were all goin' campin', I dunno, surveillance, intercepting our owl mail when we were plannin' it? I've spent years tryin' not to think about it because if I do I always think 'why couldn't it have been me instead of Ben, he didn't deserve it'," he shrugged, choosing to look down at his feet then instead of her.
His gaze flickered back up to meet hers when they were on safer subjects and he nodded with a grin, "She hangs with the lads easily enough but I'm pretty damn sure Charlie's a gerl. I never noticed before now how confusin' it could be for 'outsiders'," he commented lightly. Mason's amused smile quickly turned to a hearty chuckle then as she talked of Ben, "Exactly right, jeez you'd think you like... were his sister or something..." he trailed off jokingly before nodding, "But yeah, he was doing the silently lustin' after her act for years and... I was a dick really... I knew he liked her but I thought she was pretty so I just 'made a move', so to speak like. Well I don't think it ruined our friendship, I'm not sure he's very impressed that I blabbed to Rosalind that he had a thing for her. He didn't even find out until she went and told him at a house party we had a while back. Still, I think if he'd wanted to make an issue of it he would have said something... right?" he asked but then smiled and shook his head. Ben wasn't exactly confrontational so he could imagine the 'forgive and forget' route was probably more likely.
"Gimme a couple of days and I can round up some seriously lonely blokes from the pubs I frequent," Mason offered with a laugh. "I also know way too many woman who are adamant on the whole 'fuck men, I'm independent' philosophy."
