"Well I... I'm not meaning to do it!" David protested before defeatedly nodding along with his friend's words. He was actually right, of course he was. "You're... you're right. Sorry I just... I thought I could deal with it sensitively and... I don't know I didn't want to come across as awful and terribly rude or anything so I just... I thought I could deal with it but apparently not. And you're right, I'm naive, I didn't think about... well... no I just didn't think, full stop," he admitted with a heavy sigh of despair.
Looking down at Mackenzie as he tried to explain and cover over her slip of saying his first name - a slip that had nearly happened many times previously but he had ignored up until now - he glanced worriedly back to Joe who just did not seem amused as the girl tried to explain herself and her actions more clearly. He would have given anything, literally anything, in that moment to be in possession of a time machine like the TARDIS. Anything to go back to the moment before the kiss, make excuses, and quickly flee in the opposite direction to Mackenzie. Anything. It was not to be though.
As the blonde then mentioned alcohol he audibly groaned as if to say 'oh god don't make this worst for yourself', his head defeatedly in his hands for a moment as she chattered on, trying her very best he could tell to make things 'right' again. She should know just as well as he did that Joe knew all when it came to students, parties and gossip... his classroom was a well-known forum for such things so he would naturally know about this party. Mackenzie's tears however were not helping matters- he immediately felt like a terrible excuse for a human being and instantly blamed himself entirely despite the fact she was the one who kissed him. The fact she was then defending him, putting herself at risk of expulsion, only added to the level of 'oh crap' that was running through his head right then. "Yes well thank you, Miss Pattinson but... well it's probably not the best time to be singing my praises, is it now?" he pointed out seriously, as though trying this 'firm' act but it really wasn't working for him.
Then, when his fellow Professor played the 'disappointed' card, David practically felt the wave of shame as though he was the one who was being told off, which he was really. Looking over at Joe, he didn't realise it but he'd been holding his breath hopefully for the man's verdict and as he assured them he would not tell anyone he momentarily closed his eyes in relief. Opening them once more to look at the girl he nodded sadly, "I... I'm sorry, Miss Pattinson, once again for... if I did anything to make you believe... well what you believed, I didn't intend such a thin," he said solemnly before looking worriedly at his friend as he adressed him. "Yes?" he managed to get out, barely a whisper, before he nodded quickly, "Of course, I'll... how about we uh... head to my office? I can resume the search for my cat tomorrow and we'll have a cup of tea and..." the rest of his sentence faded away as he was offered a Jaffa cake, "Thanks but no thanks Joe," he smiled tightly. "Shall we?" he asked, vaguely waving his hand in the direction of his office.
